Sands Steps Aside, Bowe to Assume BHA Presidency

Having served as President of the Bahamas Hotel Association longer than any other individual since the organization was established fifty-eight years ago, Robert ‘Sandy’ Sands thanked BHA members at their recent Annual General Meeting as he stepped aside as President to make way for a new leadership team which assumes office at the turn of the year.
 
BHA members elected Stuart Bowe, Senior Vice President for Kerzner International, as their 2011 President.  Bowe brings to BHA over 20 years of hotel management and leadership experience, presently overseeing the operations of 1116 rooms as General Manager for the Coral and Beach Towers.

BHA President Sands Points to Progress and Challenges at Annual Industry Meet

Addressing members of the Bahamas Hotel Association at its 58th Annual General Meeting, President Sandy Sands stated that while most tourism indicators inched up in 2010, the year has been “a mixed bag of revenue gains, higher operating costs, and global uncertainty”.

Saunders, Markantonis Attain Top Tourism Honors

A legendary successful tourism entrepreneur and a dynamic hotel President lead the way in the Cacique Awards recognitions as two winners of the 14th Cacique Awards and finalists in all other categories were announced this week.

William Saunders, founder of Majestic Tours, was named the recipient of the Ministry of Tourism and Aviation’s Clement Maynard Lifetime Achievement Award while Kerzner President and Managing Director George Markantonis was named Hotelier of the Year for the 14th Cacique Awards.

In announcing the selection of George Markantonis as Hotelier of the Year, BHA President Sandy Sands said “The Hotelier of the Year is a coveted award that recognizes an accomplished individual at the pinnacle of hotel performance.  George’s commitment to his company, our industry and the country is well demonstrated by the actions he has undertaken and by the respect he has earned from his employees and colleagues.

Baha Mar Raises Hotel Branding Concerns

Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham said that he is not satisfied with the hotel brand arrangements that Baha Mar has made to date.

Last month Ingraham expressed concerns about how Baha Mar would be branded and how it will fill so many new rooms, when for a second year it has had to temporarily close one of its hotels because of low demand.

Since then Baha Mar announced partnerships with three hotel brands.

Asked if those announcements appeased his concerns, Ingraham said,”It does not at all.”

Nassau/P.I. Hotels Record 11% Rate Increase

Hotels in Nassau/Paradise Island saw their average daily room rates increase by 11 per cent during the 2010 second quarter, but the Bahamas Hotel Association (BHA) president warned not to read too much into those figures, pointing out that this had been matched by cost increases with the sector currently in the middle of its traditionally weakest period.
