Tourism Jobs for Bahamians initiative launched
The Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA) and the Bahamas Hotel and Tourism Association (BHTA) have launched a ‘Tourism Jobs for Bahamians’ initiative to secure temporary employment in the hospitality industry.
CHTA’s Caribbean Tourism Job Bank will seek out positions within The Bahamas and the Caribbean, the United States and Canada for Bahamians whose islands and jobs were devastated by Hurricane Dorian.
Several hotels within The Bahamas have already been identified.
Dorian Blows Away 2,500 Tourism Jobs
Some 2,500 tourism jobs, which supported more than 10,000 family members, were blown away by Hurricane Dorian it was revealed yesterday.
The category five storm’s impact on employment levels in The Bahamas’ largest private sector industry was exposed by Bahamian and regional tourism associations as they unveiled an initiative to find work for hospitality workers displaced by the storm.
The Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA) and Bahamas Hotel and Tourism Association (BHTA) announced their Tourism Jobs for Bahamians initiative, which aims to secure temporary employment for impacted workers. They are working with public and private sector tourism partners in the Caribbean, The Bahamas and South Florida.

In some sense, it feels downright wrong to imagine an enjoyable vacation in The Bahamas. Yet, that is exactly what the people and the government of the Islands of The Bahamas beg us to do. Visiting is the best way (but not the only way) to help Bahamians.
News continues to report the unfathomable destruction that Hurricane Dorian wrought on the tourism-dependent northernmost islands of the Bahamas: Grand Bahama and the nearby Abacos Islands. The stories of mourning survivors, now homeless, and all they have lost are heartbreaking. Many people—and, perhaps, you—wonder how to help.
…BHTA: Hurricane Relief Efforts
First and foremost, our hearts and our minds remain focused on those in Grand Bahama and Abaco who have suffered greatly due to Hurricane Dorian.
The Bahamas Hotel and Tourism Association which is a part of NEMA’s ESF 12 Team, has transitioned from assisting The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism and partner public and sector agencies to get ready for Hurricane Dorian; to supporting the mammoth response and relief efforts directed at persons from Grand Bahama and Abaco who have been devastated by the impact of this once-in-a-generation weather disaster.
Our primary role has been, and continues to be a private-public sector liaison for varying facets of relief efforts. Immediately after the passing of the storm; the BHTA aimed its focus on assisting NEMA; its cadre of underlying public sector agencies, and private sector facilitators whose primary task was to receive, welcome and document evacuees. Displaced persons were then transported, via public sector agencies and private sector donors to government shelters. Evacuees, who had gone through so much found respite thanks to the incredible efforts of the public and private sector who opened, staffed and procured supplies such as food and bedding for the vast influx of displaced persons from Abaco and Grand Bahama.

From pledging millions to matching donations to a charity auction, the travel industry is helping the Bahamas rebuild.
At the start of the month, tragedy struck the Bahamas when Category 5 Hurricane Dorian tore its way through the Abaco Islands and Grand Bahama Island. Following what NASA reported as sustained winds of 185 mph, with gusts over 200 mph, the devastating storm has left catastrophic destruction in its wake, including a death toll that’s nearing 50 people and the displacement of over 70,000 individuals, according to CNN. Now, the country is in dire need of help—and the travel industry is heeding their call.
BHTA Golf Tournament New Date: Nov 17
The Bahamas Hotel and Tourism’s 21st Annual Golf Tournament which was scheduled to be held on Sunday, November 3rd, 2019 will be postponed until SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 17TH 2019.
In the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian; The BHTA, alongside a vast cadre of public and private sector members; Bahamian businesses- many of whom are traditional participants and supporters of the Golf Tournament; are deeply engaged in Hurricane Dorian Relief Efforts.
NEMA and NGOs in Partnership towards Hurricane Dorian Relief
NASSAU, The Bahamas – A number of Non-Governmental Organizations are partnering with the National Emergency Management agency, NEMA in bringing relief to residents of Grand Bahama in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian.
At a NEMA press conference on Tuesday, September 10, 2019 local NGOs such as Head Knowles, New Providence Community Church, Bahamas Gaming Operators Association, Hands for Hunger, Rotary, One Eleuthera Foundation, and the Bahamas Hotel and Tourism Association reported on their working relationship with NEMA, in ongoing efforts to bring some sense of normalcy to those communities that been affected by the storm.
