Tax Policies Must Protect Tourism

Stuart BoweFollow the dollar multiplier and it’s clear that ‘Tourism is everybody’s business’.  More than 50 cents out of each dollar in every Bahamian’s pocket came from a tourist.

Whether you are working at the front desk in a hotel, operating a hair salon in the city, selling cars in the community, a nurse at a Family Island public clinic, a linesman for BEC, an independent business owner, or a cashier in a grocery store; more than half of that dollar in your pocket came from a tourist.

BHTA: Governor’s Comments Shows Need For ‘Great Caution’ On VAT

Concerns about value-added tax (VAT) expressed by Barbados Central Bank Governor Delisle Worrell underscore the importance of approaching VAT or any tax reform “with great caution and the value of broad public and private sector stakeholder collaboration and buy-in up-front,” according to the Bahamas Hotel and Tourism Association.

Tourism-based businesses must place much greater focus on tools which can allow them to measure customer satisfaction as a means of “training and motivation,” according to the President of the Bahamas Hotel and Tourism Association Stuart Bowe.

Scholarship Applications Now Being Accepted

Thank you to BHTA members who supported our recent fundraising activities.  Thanks to you there are presently 12 Bahamian students receiving scholarships valued at $67,000!

Now we need to set our sights on assisting another group of promising Bahamians with pursuing a career in tourism.

Applications are now being accepted for scholarships thru the Industry Partners Patrick S. Poll Shows Over Half Of Hotels Unprofitable In 2013

More hotels failed to turn a profit in 2013 than were able to do so, with slipping profitability last year reversing a four-year trend of improving income in the Bahamian tourism industry, according to the Bahamas Hotel and Tourism    Association, whose president yesterday expressed “great concern” about the decline in hotel performance.
