Caribbean hoteliers predict ‘exciting and fruitful’ 2020

The President of the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA), Patricia Affonso-Dass is predicting that 2020 will be an exciting and fruitful year for the sector.

“As we look ahead through the crystal ball to 2020, data received from CHTA members indicate we may have more to celebrate. While there are challenges and there is always the unknown, most indicators point to continued steady economic conditions in our key source markets and robust visitor expenditures,” she said in an end of year message.

Caribbean Travel Marketplace will bolster the message that The Bahamas is open for business, according to Minister of Tourism Dionisio D’Aguilar.

D’Aguilar said the added bonus of Caribbean Travel Marketplace is that it will get the message out to the rest of the world that Hurricane Dorian did not ravage the entire country and that “the heart of the tourism infrastructure on New Providence” has not been impacted.

2020 Caribbean Travel Marketplace registrations pacing strong

The 2020 edition of Caribbean Travel Marketplace, slated for The Bahamas between January 21 and 23, 2020, is generating lots of buzz and excitement, with officials reporting strong registration pace for the event.

Frank Comito, CEO and Director General of the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA), reported that the region’s largest and longest-standing tourism marketing event has confirmed close to 500 supplier delegates from more than 170 supplier companies to date.

The Bahamas government has approved a $300m expansion to Baha Mar, which will see the addition of a new water park to the property, bringing the resort’s total investment up to $4.8bn.

Davis calls for livable wage study to be conducted

The Bahamas needs a livable wage study in order to determine what the minimum wage in the country should be, said Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) Leader Philip Davis yesterday.

“I think the time has come for us to do a complete and comprehensive study of what is a livable wage in this country,” said Davis, during a press conference at the PLP headquarters.
