June 2017

Lamon Rolle
Butler
Sandals Emerald Bay in Exuma

1. Can you briefly describe your experience in the tourism sector and what your role is today?

My experience in the tourism sector so far has been an amazing one. I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to work for such a great company as Sandals. Sandals have played a huge role in my training and development. I’m currently a Butler at Sandals Emerald Bay, Great Exuma.

2. Why did you choose to work in tourism as a career?

I chose to work in the tourism sector as a career because I’ve always loved meeting new people, being a host for our Country and making others happy through my genuine service. Being in tourism gives me the opportunity to teach our culture to my Guests and I enjoy being an Ambassador for the Bahamas

3. What has been your most memorable moment?

My most memorable moment so far was winning the Team Member of the Year award at Sandals Emerald Bay; it’s a great feeling for being awarded for what you love to do

4. Has the industry changed since you started your career? How?

There hasn’t been much change in the industry since I started. I can see that tourism and hospitality are lowly slipping and falling behind. I don’t think we are taking it as serious as we used to. I think we need to address that before it is too late

5. What should The Bahamas focus on to stay competitive?

I think we need to focus on developing our youth; we need more training programmes. We should work with students who are interested in tourism so that when they graduate they are well trained and ready for the work force. As a country we must focus on ending crime. This is a vexing problem for all of us and can scare our tourists. An increase in crime would eventually lead to decrease in visitors.

6. What advice would you give to a young person who is considering a career in tourism?

I would encourage any young person who is considering a career in tourism to be themselves. To always display manners and respect, to treat every Guest the way you would want to be treated. Always remember that Tourism is bigger than just you and to always be the best Ambassador that you can be.
