1. Can you briefly describe your experience in the tourism sector and what your role is today?

My experience in the sector has been a very rewarding and gratifying one.  My role is presently The Executive Housekeeper at Comfort Suites Paradise Island.

2. Why did you choose to work in tourism as a career?

Tourism was not my first choice as a career.  I was introduced to the industry by a lifelong friend where I started as an office clerk in the Sustainable Tourism Entrepreneurial Management and Marketing (STEMM) Project.  It was there that I fell in love with the industry and witnessed firsthand the challenges and opportunities small hoteliers faced and the many roles they played to keep their businesses operating; from being the Cook, the Room Attendant, the Front Desk Agent and the Engineer.

3. What has been your most memorable moment?

My most memorable moments thus far was being selected “Leader of the Year”, in addition to my Department “Housekeeping” winner of the Customer Service Award for two consecutive years. In addition to my nomination and being named a finalist in the 17th Annual Cacique Award in the Manager of The Year category.

4. Has the industry changed since you started your career? How?

The Industry has changed a lot. In the past, advertisements took forever to be made; now with the era of smart phones and the advancement of technology, the advertisement of your business, whether positively or negatively, only needs a guest review or video to be uploaded to the social websites. 

5. What should The Bahamas focus on to stay competitive?

The Bahamas should focus on promoting our Family Islands as a viable destination in addition to Nassau.  A greater and more consistent effort should be made as it relates to promoting the authenticity of each Island.  Creating and giving our visitors a unique Bahamian experience. 

6. What advice would you give to a young person who is considering a career in tourism?

My advice to any young person considering a career in Tourism is to become qualified and educated; experience helps but qualifications solidify your commitment to the industry.  Take a self assessment and if service and humility is not in your heart, then choose another career.
