Tru Tru Bahamian Festival on tap this weekend

The event will feature children’s games, such as the egg-and-spoon race, hula hoop and the needle-and-thread race. There will also be competitions including musical chairs, a sack race, a washing competition and skipping race, as well as activities like as kite-flying, Bahamian storytelling, ring play, children’s pineapple-eating contest and plaiting the maypole.

Attendees can look forward to performances from the Sir Gerald Cash Primary School Rake ‘n’ Scrape Band, Lady E, Ira Storr & The Spank Band, Tingum Dem Band and a Junkanoo Commandos rushout.

There will also be a hot and spicy pepper sauce-tasting competition by members of the Bahamas National Culinary team.

It will be two days of experiences at the Bahamas Hotel and Tourism Association-hosted event.

The February 2-3 festival highlights Bahamian culture and history, as evidenced by the diverse schedule of activities that will showcase a variety of traditional, culturally based Bahamian activities and authentic Bahamian food and drink, art, crafts, music and dance.

The festival also brings together Bahamian artisans and sundry vendors, who showcase candles, soaps, scrubs, teas, jewelry, straw goods, spices and jams.

A turn at this festival may help you identify what makes you Bahamian; it’s billed as a festival for locals and visitors, young and old.

The festival, which began in 2015, showcases what makes each island individually unique and what each lends to traditions, handicrafts, food and drink, the environment and celebrations of song and dance.

The festival will be held 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday at the distillery on Delancy Street. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under.
