Baha Mar To Create Bahamas Jobs
“I’m still expecting to see business casualties continue to grow [and] the only thing that may provide a psychological boost is the Baha Mar project,” he told Guardian Business. “I don’t know how that will translate to jobs and money on the ground, but that would start to lift the mood and pump money in the economy to soak up some of these 2,500 jobs.”
While he did say it was important that as many jobs as possible go to Bahamians, he argued that in the long term, completion of the development will provide the most the jobs. That’s a number ranging close to 8,000 following completion, Guardian Business understands.
Yesterday, Chairman and CEO of Baha Mar Sarkis Izmirlian confirmed that the resort was “very close” to completing its final leg of financing, which will enable it to move forward early this year with construction of the multimillion dollar project.
As much as 2,500 jobs are expected to be created for Bahamians during construction of the project, while an exact number of agreed Chinese workers expected to come in to work on the development still remains unconfirmed.
The Bahamas, however, has been warned by the head of the Barbados Contractors Association to closely monitor the amount of workers that come into the country under this and other projects going on around town.
