July 2005

The Coalition for Education Reform is a group of business, professional and labour associations that are concerned about the state of education in the Bahamas. A listing of its members is on the back cover.

The Coalition commissioned this Report that examines the factual basis for their concern and proposes an education reform program which includes fourteen strategies that to a large degree are based on programs already in place.

This Report is a logical follow-up to a statement on education contained in the Tourism Taskforce Report on Trade Liberalization of April 2003. That Report was presented to the Trade Commission and education policy was discussed at that meeting.

High Failure Rate in Core Subjects Underscores Extent of Education Crisis

A deeper analysis of the English and Mathematics results of BGCSE test results underscores the extent of the nation’s education crisis, according to the Coalition for Education Reform.

The findings further reinforce the Coalition´s growing concern about the scarcity of Bahamian school leavers prepared to enter the workforce, as evidenced increasingly by employers who point to the large number of young job applicants who cannot pass basic pre-employment tests.

The Coalition has now released “Bahamian Youth – The Untapped Resource, Report No. 2” as a follow-up to its first report submitted to the 18th National Education Conference of the Ministry of Education in July 2005.
